Free Downloads

Building a website isn’t free. Maintaining the website isn’t free. Creating software content isn’t free. Most importantly, maintaining a server database isn’t free.

Downloads have much the same with magazines. One is that it costs real money to make them, and two is that they are sometimes available for free.

A free download is anything that could be downloaded from the Internet free of charge. It could be ring tones, MP3 files, video files, software, data, etc. As long as it doesn’t charge anything, it’s a free download.

Like free ring tones, free downloads are also an effective way to generate traffic and attention to your website, and so business models are built around them. Some websites offer free downloads and then make up for it by featuring ad through banners and pop ups. Sometimes the free download itself is embedded with a third-party program, another effective marketing strategy.

Of course the person downloading the file needs to be informed of the third-party program’s presence or else the process is illegal. Information about the third-party software is usually stated in the User’s Terms of Agreement. So always read this before you download anything.
